Eolas Fúinn / About Us

Douglas Hyde founded the Gaelic League in 1893 to champion the native language of the Irish people. Known as Gaeilge to its speakers, this language has withstood the test of time, surviving centuries of British colonial oppression, and is still spoken daily by approximately 75,000 individuals across Ireland.

The Irish patriots Thomas and Kathleen Clarke, inspired by Hyde's vision, founded the Brooklyn Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge) in 1902. They returned to Ireland in 1907 and played a pivotal part in the 1916 Easter Uprising.

The Brooklyn branch was reestablished in 2016 under a new name, Cumann Cháitlín agus Thomáis Uí Chléirigh, honoring its founders Kathleen and Thomas Clarke. In March of 2026, the branch will celebrate 10 years since its reorganization.
