Eolas Fúinn / About Us
Douglas Hyde founded the Gaelic League in 1893 to champion the native language of the Irish people. Known as Gaeilge to its speakers, this language has withstood the test of time, surviving centuries of British colonial influence, and is still spoken daily by approximately 75,000 individuals across Ireland.
The Irish Patriots Thomas and Kathleen Clarke, inspired by Hyde's vision , founded the Brooklyn Conradh na Gaeilge/Gaelic League in 1902. They returned to Ireland in 1907 and played a pivotal part in the 1916 Easter Uprising .
The Brooklyn branch was reestablished in 2011. The group was given the name
Cumann Cháitlín agus Thomáis Uí Chléirighin Conradh na Gaeilge
honoring its founders Thomas and Kathleen Clarke.
Today, the branch provides weekly Irish language (Gaeilge) classes on Tuesday evenings and sits in on a monthly Seisiún.
